ICYMI: Ohio’s school AI policy requirement is already in effect. WHIO’s August 18 reporting by Steve Mehaffie and Nick Foley looks at how local schools are approaching implementation.

The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce specifies that traditional public school districts, community schools, and STEM schools were required to adopt an AI policy by July 1, 2026. Schools could adopt the department’s model policy or develop their own.

The state’s model addresses student and staff use, privacy, academic integrity, and the evaluation of AI tools.

From Policy to Practice

A policy becomes useful when people understand what it means in an actual classroom. Can students explain when AI is allowed? Do teachers have examples for different assignments? Do families know what tools their children encounter?

Pedagogy over panic means connecting written expectations to teaching, practice, and ongoing review. Policies should help educators make thoughtful decisions and help students understand the reasons behind them.
